The Edge nació bajo el nombre de David Howell Evans el 8 de agosto de 1961 en Barking, Essex (East London), sus padres se llaman Garvin y Gwenda Evans. Su hermano mayor se llama Dick y su hermana menor Gill. A la edad de 1 año su familia se instala en Dublin permanentemente. A pesar de ser un chico silencioso y tímido, David era un gran alumno con un futuro promisorio en Medicina, pero para desilusión de sus padres, abondonó los estudios para dedicarse de lleno a su banda. De pequeño tomaba clases de piano y de guitarra, y a menudo practicaba con su hermano Dick. La primera vez que empuño una guitarra fué a la edad de 9 años

En el otoño boreal de 1976, David encontró una nota en la pizarra de su colegio secundario Mount Temple Comprehensive High School, la firmaba un tal Larry Mullen quien buscaba músicos para una banda de rock. Cuenta la leyenda que el fue el primero en llegar a la reunión de Larry acompañado de su hermano Dick, y poco tiempo despues arrivó Adam Clayton. Llegaron otros hasta que se encontraron con Paul Hewson (quien en algunos dias lo rebautizarían como Bono Vox from O'connel Street) y entre esas 5 personas se generó una química instantánea. Dias mas tarde Dave adoptaría un alias, The Edge [el filo], adquirió ese sobrenombre debido a sus facciones filosas y su aguda inteligencia.
En julio de 1983, Edge se casó con su novia de la secundaria Aislinn O'Sullivan con quien tuvo tres hijas: Holly (nacida en 1985), Arrun (nacida en 1986) y Blue Angel (nacida en 1989). En al año 1990 se separan, pero recién en 1996 consigue el divorcio ya que en Irlanda todavía era ilegal. Su separación fue tormentosa y es sin duda el transfondo lúgubre del album Achtung Baby, hay tres líricas influenciadas por esta relación: "So Cruel", "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" y "Love is Blindness". Durante la gira del Zoo TV Tour de 1993, Edge se enamora de la bailarina del vientre Morleigh Steinberg con quien se casa el 22 de junio de 2002. Tienen dos hijos, una nena de nombre Sian Beatrice Echo (nacida en octubre de 1997) y un nene, Levi (nacido en octubre de 1999).

Al igual que todos los miembros de la banda, The Edge ha colaborado con varias causas humanitarias, pero hay un proyecto en el cual se ha involucrado en cuerpo y alma: Musig Rising. Esta fundación procura reintegrar los instrumentos perdidos a los musicos damnificados por el Huracán Katrina, quienes no solo perdieron sus hogares sinó también el unico instrumento de trabajo.

La incursion solista de The Edge incluye proyectos poco ambiciosos, como sesionista de Johnny Cash, B. B. King, Tina Turne, Roy Orbison y Ron Wood entre otros (el listado completo lo podes consultar en este enlace)
En 1996 creo la banda sonora del film Captive, junto a Michael Brook y Sinead O'Connor. Tambien compuso la canción de la serie animada 'The Batman'

Edge tiene un estilo único, algo que muy pocos guitarristas han logrado. Sin dudas su forma de tocar es el sello de las canciones de U2, lo que las distingue y las hacen carácteristicas. Habitualmente se lo señala como el "anti-guitar hero" ya que evita los solos extravagantes en escena y las demostraciones de virtuosismo. Con las notas justas en el momento justo crea climas tan etéreos como sólidos. Además de su rol de guitarrista, a veces se anima con los teclados y sintetizadores, y de vez en cuando compone letras y canta.

The Edge toca principalente guitarea electrica, acustica, teclados, ocasionalmente bajo (para "40" y grabo "Race Against Time") y lap steel guitar.
De acuerdo a su tecnico Dallas Schoo, Edge utiliza demasiadas guitarras, y tipico musico utiliza de 4 a 5 guitarras por show, mientras que The Edge lleva 45 de gira y utiliza entre 17 y 19 en conciertos de 2 horas y media. Se estima que en el estudio tiene mas de 200 guitarras.
