U2 Complete Digital Box Set

El 23 de noviembre de 2004 finalmente los fans pudieron acceder a la promocionada "U2 Complete Digital Box Set" de iTunes que contiene 446 tracks. Las canciones abarcan toda la trayectoria de U2, desde sus primeros demos hasta el nuevo album, este set cumple bien con el trabajo de mostrar la amplia trayectoria de U2. Tambien se incluye un archivo en .pdf donde se detallan los discos y simples con sus respectivas imagenes de cada lanzamiento, en algunos casos se incluyen introducciones a cada set escritas por The Edge y Bill Flanagan.
El set se titula "The Complete U2" y muchos fans podran decir que su nombre es engañoso. Para empezar, muchas canciones se ignoraron de plano, la mayoría son covers de otros artistas admirados durante tantos años. Y como algunos de esos temas son los favoritos de los fans, su ausencia se nota.

Otro detalle es que 48 de los tracks son duplicados de canciones que se hallan en el mismo set, lo que deja 398 canciones originales de las 446 que se prometen. Lo que ocurre es que en el esfuerzo completista, tomaron canciones como "Beautiful Day" -que no tiene una mezcla distinta - y la misma version esta en "All That You Can't Leave Behind" y en el single "Beautiful Day". Es decepcionante tener que pagar dos veces por casi 50 canciones que ya tenes.

Lo mas destacable del set es el material raro que ni el ultrafanatico de U2 tiene. Pero hay otro punto controversial: el ultrafanatico tiene que comprar el set entero solo por 10 o 15 audios ineditos, ya que no se pueden comprar por separado. Ademas, este set se consigue en pocos paises y para peor, los sistemas operativos mas populares no son compatibles (Windows 2000, 98 etc.)

Comentarios: No esta nada mal esta selección del material temprano de la banda. Sonido digital para "Three", "Another Day", "11 O'Clock Tick Tock", "A Day without Me" y "I Will Follow" . "Out of Control" live from Boston 1981, originalmante lanzada como lado B del single "I Will Follow" no se incluye porque se vende como concierto entero en este box set. "A Day Without Me" y "I Will Follow" son las mismas del disco, su inclusion aqui es innecesaria porque se duplica con Boy. Hay que pagar dos veces por exactamente la misma cancion? Los otros temas son versiones diferentes a las incluidas en los albumes.
Tracks olvidados: Faltó la version de "Stories for Boys", publicada en la compilacion Just for Kicks.

Comentarios: An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart esta separada, en el estilo de las copias de UK y las nuevas reimpresiones del disco.
Tracks Olvidados: El instrumental de 0:30 que alguna vez se incluyo en las copias de vinilo de Boy ... hubiera estado bueno tener en sonido digital esta temprana version de "Fire".

Comentarios: No habia necesidad de incluir "Fire" o "Gloria" ya que estas canciones se pueden descargar de October. Otra vez, duplicacion innecesaria. "11 O'Clock Tick Tock / The Ocean", "Cry / The Electric Co." y "I Will Follow" son parte del show de marzo de 1981 que tambien esta disponible para bajar, nuevamente es innecesario que se incluya.
Tracks olvidados: La edicon de 3:14 de Fire que aparece en el single promocional no se incluye, y hubiera sido mas sensato ofrecer esa que la misma que aparece en el disco. Lo mismo con la version de 3:26 de Gloria, incluida en el simple promocional. Tambien se nota la ausencia de las dos versiones de October, disponibles en la banda sonora de They Call it an Accident, pero quizas haya sido mejor olvidarse que existieron. Tambien falta la version en vivo de "I Will Follow" grabada en Veronica's Closet y lanzado como single en Holanda y Alemania.

Tracks olvidados: Two Hearts (Import Version) (3:42) no aparece a pesar de haber sido publicada en el single comercial. Tampoco Two Hearts (Long Version) (5:57) que esta incluida en el promo. La version de 4:16 de New Year's Day aparece en este set pero tambien en el del the Best of 1980 - 1990.

Comentarios: Under a Blood Red Sky fue sometido a varias remasterizaciones a lo largo de los años. Aparentemente, estos tracks pertenecen a la edicion norteamericana.
Tracks Olvidados: Al parecer incluyeron la version de Electric Co. editada... los que esperaban escuchar el pedacito de "Send in the Clowns" deberan seguir hurgando en las disquerias que ofrezcan el disco con la vieja version. Tambien falta la version de I Will Follow live, con el sonido de audiencia mas aplacado.

Comentarios: En mi opinion, es en este punto donde el "Digital Box Set" comienza a ir mal. Es muy decepcionante no ver los grandes covers de "Dancing Barefoot", "Everlasting Love" y "Unchained Melody". La falta de estos temas convierte a este set en menos que completo. Se dice que no se incluyeron por las licencias de copyright. Tampoco es necesaria la version single de "Desire", lo unico diferente de la del album es que el comentario inicial de Adam desaparece. "All I Want is You" se duplica con la version del album, otra vez sin necesidad.
Tracks olvidados: "Desire (9:23 Hollywood Remix)" incluido en varios promos, las versiones alternativas de "When Love Comes to Town (Live from the Kingdom Mix)" y "God Part II (Hard Metal Dance Mix) tambien de varios promos. Las versiones de "Dancing Barefoot" y "Everlasting Love" y "Unchained Melody" publicadas en el single de All I Want is You. Ademas falta "Pride" que fue publicada en la compilacion de Rainbow Warriors en una version diferente en vivo.

Comentarios: Se vuelven a duplicar los tracks de los singles con los del album, hay que pagar dos veces por "The Fly", "Mysterious Ways" y "One". Al menos "Even Better than the Real Thing" y "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" son distintos. Al igual que con los simples de Rattle and Hum , ignoraron los covers y su ausencia es notoria. Tambien ignoraron las versiones de los promos dificiles de conseguir.

"Levitate", "Love You Like Mad", "Smile", "Flower Child", "Beautiful Ghost", "Xanax and Wine", "Native Son" y las versiones alternativas de "All Because of You", "Yahweh" y "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own" son los tracks verdaderamente novedosos que se publican por iTunes. No se pueden comprar por separado: hay que adquirir esta "Digital Box Set" para obtenerlos ... un robo para los fans que ya tenemos los demas temas y solo queriamos completar la discografia con este material nuevo. Gastariamos algo asi como 15 dolares por cada cancion inedita. Los otros tracks que figuran entre los rare tracks se consiguen en la disqueria: "Jesus Christ", "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" y "Night and Day (Twilight Remix)" fueron publicados en varias compilados. "Stateless" sale de la banda sonora de the Million Dollar Hotel. "Bass Trap", "Salome" y "Numb" se incluyen en el CD de lados B del Best Of. Comentarios: A lo largo de los años, casi todos estos tracks fueron editados como caras B de singles. En 1998 U2 todavia cortaba tracks de este recital como lados B. Esta muy bien tener el show junto y remasterizado, pero hubiera sido mejor tener otro que no hayamos escuchado nunca.

Comentarios: Nunca antes se editaron de manera oficial, su inclusion en el set es un acierto. De todas formas, estos tracks en especial son los demos que se consiguen con mayor facilidad en el mercado pirata... quizas la inclusion de demos mas raros hubiera sido una eleccion mas adecuada.
