GQ Awards [09.09.07] The Edge participó de los GQ Awards la semana pasada, homenajeando al diseñador de iPod: Edge was at the GQ Awards in London earlier this week, honouring Jonathan Ive the designer of the iPod. 'Okay! Hands up anyone who owns a Zune?. A solitary arm was raised in reponse to Edge's question at Londons Royal Opera House. 'Who owns an iPod?' Surprise - almost every arm in the room shot up, which was Edge's cue to celebrate the achievements of his good friend Jonny Ive, 'The iPod is such an integral part of our lives that it's hard to believe there was a time when it didn't exist. But there was. Remarkably, someone went to work one day, stared at a blank piece of paper, and dreamed up this beautiful, clever, desirable piece of kit. GQ's Product Designer of the Year is the creator of the iPod, the iPhone, and quite simply everything we know and love about Apple. He brings beautiful objects to the masses, he is the truly gifted Jonathan Ive.' Edge was joined at the event by Paul McGuinness and Kathy; also presenting awards were Helena Christensen, Madonna and Naomi Campbell - to recipients such as Kanye West, Paul McCartney and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Pavarotti [09.09.07]
Bono escribe un sentido homenaje para despedir al gran tenor: BBC, September 06, 2007 "Some can sing opera, Luciano Pavarotti was an opera. No one could inhabit those acrobatic melodies and words like him. He lived the songs, his opera was a great mash of joy and sadness; surreal and earthy at the same time; a great volcano of a man who sang fire but spilled over with a love of life in all its complexity, a great and generous friend. Great, great fun, The Pavlova we used to call him. An emotional arm twister if he wanted you to do something for him he was impossible to turn down. A great flatterer. When he wanted U2 to write him a song he rang our housekeeper, Theresa, continually so we talked about little else in our house. When he wanted U2 to play his festival in Modena, he turned up in Dublin unannounced with a film crew, and door-stopped the band. His life and talent was large but his sense of service to the weak and vulnerable was larger. We wrote Miss Sarajevo for him. He had worked on the humanitarian crisis that was the war in Bosnia. We travelled together on a UN air force flight to Mostar... all of us earnest in hard hats, just about strapped into this industrial aircraft with the big man handing out parmigiano from Reggio Emilia, "the best cheese in the world" he kept saying, deadpan, to make us laugh. In Pesaro, in his summer house, he lived an almost bohemian life with a recording studio set up in an out house - but did all his vocals in his bedroom... there was a hammock hung between two marine pines for a siesta. He liked to eat, sleep and then warm up his vocals, though I remember more eating than warming up. When we first recorded with him I left a stone heavier than I arrived. Intellectually curious, couldn't stick to his own generation - loved new ideas, new people, new song forms. A sexy man whose life lit up again when he fell in love with Nicoletta and as he watched Alice play in the yard. He loved all his daughters so much. The sadness of losing his only boy his only silence. I spoke to him last week... the voice that was louder than any rock band was a whisper. Still he communicated his love. Full of love. That's what people don't understand about Luciano Pavarotti. Even when the voice was dimmed in power, his interpretive skills left him a giant among a few tall men." (c) BBC, 2007. |

Adiós Hanover [09.09.07] Los legendarios estudios Hanover de Dublin
acaban de ser demolidos: U2 are bemoaning the loss of the studio they recorded many of their albums in. The Hanover Quay HQ in Dublin had a special place in the band's hearts. Guitarist The Edge he told The Sun: "It's getting demolished as part of a redevelopment of the docklands. It is going to be turned into a tower block and we we'll make the penthouse into a studio. "It's very sad, that place felt like home. I don't know what it wil be like recording in the new studio, we are so used to the other place." The guitarist also added that U2 have been in Morocco writing songs. Although the follow up to 2004's 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' is expected in 2008, he said: "We don't have anything scheduled for a new album. It's nice not to have that pressure." |

Larry Mullen, Jr. From the militaristic drums of War, to the bombastic stadium bluster of Joshua Tree, to the electronic experiments found on later albums, Larry Mullens rhythmic style has always been integral to U2s chameleonic career. A competent and complementary drummer, Mullens style is subtle; a balanced backdrop to Bonos broad histrionics. As textural as he is tectonic, Mullens mixed background (marching bands and jazz) melded to provide U2 a vast percussive range. Its a basis upon which theyve built their varied career, his style segueing seamlessly from post-punk to stadium rock to ambient soundscapes with ease. And while he may not be the most technically proficient drummer, hes proven, over the past 30 years, to be one of the most pertinent. The Best Of

Album [19.08.07]
"Love Is All We Have Left" - a song Bono named during his May, 2006, trip to Africa as one that he had recently written. "Its like an old Broadway tune. I thought it was a Frank Sinatra song," Bono said. "North Star," a song from the How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb sessions which included a guest organ appearance from Michael W. Smith. In this CCM article, Smith describes the song as a tribute to Johnny Cash. "Mercy", one of the last songs to get cut from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, described in Blender magazine as "a six-and-a-half-minute outpouring of U2 at its most uninhibitedly U2-ish" "Lead Me In The Way I Should Go"
-- a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in this February, 2003,
interview with Bono in Grammy Magazine "You Can't Give Away Your Heart" - a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in SPIN magazine |

U2 3D [05.08.07] Aparentemente la película U2 3D demorará su estreno hasta enero del año que viene, según este artículo de AtU2: U2 3D will be presented at the Giant Screen Cinema Association conference in Vancouver next month, but what's newsworthy is that the movie's listing on the conference Web site shows "Early 2008" as the film's release date. All previous reports about the film indicated a Fall 2007 release, as does the original movie trailer. When asked to confirm the delay, Jon Shapiro of 3ality Digital told us via e-mail: "A release date is TBD, as nothing is firm as of yet. An announcement will be forthcoming." |

During the recording sessions of U2's fifth album, The Joshua Tree, the Edge found inspiration in the form of another debut record -- the Band's Music from Big Pink released in 1968. The album's hit single, "The Weight," made famous by the classic film Easy Rider, particularly stood out for the Edge. "We were first exploring American music and hearing their work, really delving into it -- it was mind blowing for me," he said. "And that I will always associate with a particular summer up in the hills in Dublin." [...] Success carried the Edge to nearly every point on the globe. In 20 years of traveling he has accumulated an extraordinary wealth of stories, from nearly having the group's only set of guitars stolen within their first few hours in New York in December 1980, to dancing on top of the bar with Bono in pre-Katrina New Orleans. "I'd always had amazing times there," he said of New Orleans. "And I remember with Bono one night ending up in some tiny little club in an area of the city I'd never been to, dancing on the bar to this little five-piece funk outfit that didn't have any guitars. It was all brass, drums and whatever. And we were just completely blown away -- that music which was so amazing was totally unknown to us. It was like -- it was like discovering, you know, jazz for the first time or something." New Orleans definitely left its mark, and now the Edge's playlist is peppered with many of the bands he first encountered around the town with his band mates. [...] Reflecting back on his time in Louisiana, the Edge said that New Orleans music is a very unique aspect of the culture in that it continues to help victims of Katrina "celebrate being alive after everything that had happened." "There's a strong case to be made that there on the streets of New Orleans was the beginning of that integration of African and Western music which begat jazz, begat R&B, begat rock 'n' roll," said the Edge. "So, you know, I wouldn't be here...if it wasn't for this very unique part of America and these little flukes of history and circumstance. And it's still all there. That's the amazing thing." |

The Edge: At least 50 figures were stolen or wrecked several weeks ago, the museum reported Monday. The wax museum, closed since 2005, has been storing its 400 figures in a warehouse while it works to reopen this fall. Police say they suspect a door was left unlocked and the warehouse was used for an all-night rave party but museum officials discount that theory. Most figures stolen came from the Children's World of Fairy Tale and Fantasy section; others were taken from the Chamber of Horrors. Gone are Bob the Builder, Frankenstein's monster, Fred Flintstone, Gollum from "Lord of the Rings," a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, "Silence of the Lambs" killer Hannibal Lecter, and all four Teletubbies. Guitars adorning the figures of U2's The Edge and Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott also disappeared. Others, including Elvis and Madonna, suffered lost hair, limbs or jewelry. Museum manager Kay Murray said Monday she expects to announce a new location and reopening plans next month, although she said she did not know where the money to fix all the damage would come from. She estimated the uninsured loss at $1.4 million and said some clothing - particularly the authentic rebel uniforms - was irreplaceable. "Whoever did it was looking for uniforms, because most of our uniforms were stolen," Murray said, adding, "It's not going to stop the museum reopening. It will just delay us.
